rollin' on the river

Natchez, MS Bound

Natchez, Mississippi is richly steeped in history. Indians, wars, cotton, banking, and plantations. It is covers all the things stereotypically southern. The nearly 300 year old city is located about 85 miles north of us here in Baton Rouge. It's just close enough to make it great destination for a quick day trip or weekend getaway.

But First Lunch

The rainy Saturday morning made for a lazy morning and a late start. One of us isn't an early riser...I'm looking at you Eric. On recommendation, we hit up Cotton Alley Cafe for lunch. The Apple Smoke Grilled Pork Belly with dried cranberries was our favorite. It was a great combination of smokey, sweet, and salty. However, it should be said our favorite place to eat in Natchez is The Camp. We highly recommend the Buddha Belly sandwich. It's a slightly different take on pork belly, but trust us. You'll love this sandwich.

Longwood

Natchez is home to lots of beautiful architecture. Twice a year a Pilgrimage is held during the spring and fall. If you're interested then you should know that the Spring Pilgrimage is currently underway. We were a little early and missed the pilgrimage, however many homes are open for tours year round. Longwood, aka Nutt's Folly, is one of the homes that should not be missed. It is the largest octagonal house in the United States. The history behind the would-be plantation house is as intriguing as the architecture. I think this home should be on everyone's list.

Steampunk Coffee Roasters

If you need an afternoon pick me up then Steampunk Coffee Roasters has you covered. They're  located in a cabin that dates back to 1868 and server up great coffee, tea and other goodies. Bonus they're catty-corner to Natchez Brew Company. Once you've had your pick me up, walk over and take the tour at the BrewCo. Picnic tables are stacked with board games, so take it easy and have a good time with that good pint.

Natchez Brew Company Flight

Smoot's Grocery is next door to Steampunk Coffee Roasters and, therefore, a stones throw away from the Natchez Brew Company. We were too early to catch a show, but it's on our list, so if you go then please report back!

Smoot's Grocery Blues Lounge

We'll end this with a photo of the sunset over the Mississippi River. Natchez...
